As someone who finds it disrespectful to speak at someone; I avoid this by making sure that whoever I’m speaking with gets my full attention by making eye contact with them. This becomes even more important in group settings, where I make sure to share my eye contact so that everyone feels included in the conversation, and no one feels like an “extra”.
Have you ever met someone who, when they speak in your presence, never looks up to make eye contact with you, but shares it with others in the conversation? I recently had this experience. My best friend of 10 years, has a girlfriend whom I’ve met on two separate occasions. What I find interesting about this, is the fact that my spirit does not sit well in the presence of this individual. I’ve tried for the sake of my bestie to be a good sport, and try to get along. But something in my spirit feels uneasy around this person. Remaining true to who I am, I try to make eye contact with this person and that is how I know for a FACT our eyes never meet! They refuse to look me in the eye 95% of the time, so much so that when they do look me in the eye it’s NOTED. We could be sitting at a table having a conversation and all they do when they talk is look at my best friend.
I say all of that to say this, trust your gut. I can’t trust anyone who doesn’t make eye contact with me when they are speaking in a group setting. If they can make eye contact with all other individuals in the conversation, but yet they don’t look at you, there is no way for you to build connection. Hence why your spirit will not sit well in that persons presence.
The eyes are the windows to one soul, if a soul is hiding from you – STAY AWAY.
